A Safe Alternative to Random Video Chat for Language Practice

Updated November 2, 2026 · 2 min read

For years, people used random video chat sites to find someone to practice a language with. The appeal was obvious: instant conversation with a stranger from another country. The problem was just as obvious: you never knew who would appear on the screen. Omegle, the best-known of these sites, shut down in November 2023 after years of safety concerns, and many similar sites still have the same issues.

How AmbosLive approaches it

We built AmbosLive as a language practice app first. Everyone is an adult who passed a selfie age check, which runs on their own device so no photo is uploaded. You're matched by the language you speak and the one you're learning, with a timer that swaps languages halfway. Likely nudity is blurred and ends the call automatically, contact details are hidden in chat, calls are never recorded, and reporting takes one tap. It's also not a dating app: there are no profiles to swipe, and flirting is against the rules.
